The Salpointe tournament was held on January 23rd and 24th, with a whopping 23 teams coming from all over Arizona (Apache Junction, Amphitheater, Baboquivari, Sierra Vista Buena, Canyon del Oro, Cholla, Cienega, Glendale Deer Valley, Mesa Desert Ridge, Desert View, Douglas, Peoria Liberty, Marana, Phoenix Mountain Pointe, Nogales, Palo Verde, Pueblo, Sabino, Sahuaro, Scottsdale Saguaro, Salpointe, Santa Rita and Tucson High). The format was a 32-man, double-elimination bracket for each weight class with awards earned in the medal round on Saturday. Sabino placed 9th in a field filled with 4A and 5A powerhouses. This was the first top ten finish in this tournament for our wrestlers since 2003 when the team took 10th. Ten of our wrestlers made into the second day of the two and out tournament, with Cody Day placing 2nd, and Matt Bonilla and Hayden Willingham placing 4th.
